Elizabeth Selby Infants' School

History

History Vision

At Elizabeth Selby, our vision for History is to equip children with deeper understanding where they will begin to make links and/or connections in the wider world.  They will develop and inquisitive mind and a passion for finding out about the past.

History at Elizabeth Selby Infant School teaches children to develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods.

At Elizabeth Selby, we follow the National curriculum subject content.  We provide a high-quality history education which helps children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. We inspire children’s curiosity to know more about the past, allowing children to ask questions, think critically, look for and find evidence and develop a point of view and judgement.

Learning is made meaningful for the children as they are provided with ‘real life’ experiences, where they can explore what ‘in living memory’ looks like for them.  Children are given first hand experiences through trips, visits, re-enactment and bringing in outside agencies and visitors to the school.  Texts are chosen carefully that coincide with the historical period.  Children are given opportunities to use their research skills, technology, apps that allow them to access information, artefacts, accounts, reports from the time (where possible).

At Elizabeth Selby, our history curriculum aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their own skills ‘as historians’.  As part of a topic lead programme it allows opportunities for cross curricular links to be made to ensure the children have many occasions where they can apply their knowledge and understanding.  Children’s work is displayed and updated to enhance the learning and to provide a rich language environment throughout the school.
